KARLOVY VARY – “A spa town like no other”

The town of Karlovy Vary was established by the Bohemian King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in the 14th century, and is now the Czech Republic’s largest and the most famous spa town. Since the 16th century, the town has enjoyed the favour of many noble families and aristocracy, and members of the scientific, political and artistic elite such as Beethoven, Franz Joseph I, Paganini, Mozart, and Freud. The town has grown up into a rich and romantic place, with a landscape composed of the famous Colonnades, historical spa buildings, churches, museums and peaceful parks.

Karlovy Vary boasts 79 thermal springs, which have inspired a 650-year tradition of constantly developing treatments for various ailments. Karlovy Vary spa therapies use the time-honoured thermal baths and drinking cures alongside more modern methods like cryotherapy, floating, and laser therapy. As a result of wisdom acquired over the centuries, different mineral waters are used to different effect based on their temperature and carbon dioxide content. Classic spa treatments can be enjoyed in the many Karlovy Vary spa hotels, guest houses and wellness centres, which welcome great numbers of Czech and foreign guests all year round.

Sport, recreation and culture also have their place in Karlovy Vary, and the town is becoming an increasingly important venue for gatherings and events. Tennis is popular among residents, and there are also golf tournaments, triathlon, and even a steeplechase racetrack. A number of modern, classical and folk music concerts, theatre and other events also take place.

The highlight of the town’s cultural calendar is the annual International Film Festival. This  week-long festival in June attracts film fans from around the world, and you might just bump into a world-famous film star on the streets. Jude Law, Antonio Banderas, John Malkovich, Robert De Niro and Renee Zellweger have all been known to appear.
